Days after setting a franchise mark for most wins in a season, the Folsom Pioneers pulled another first -- qualifying for the postseason.
The Pioneers, Folsom’s semi-pro baseball team, swept a doubleheader from the Oakland Expos on Sunday at Folsom High, 12-11 and 7-4 and with that, qualified for the American Amateur Baseball Congress playoffs.
“It’s awesome to do anything for the first time in franchise history,” Pioneers Owner and 2000 Folsom High graduate Mike Carter said. “It definitely feels good.”
The Pioneers had a great week, starting with Friday’s 1-0 win over the Novato Knicks. Pitcher Ben Buker pitched a no-hitter in the win, and was one pitch away from a perfect game, as he allowed a walk in the fourth inning and stuck out 14.
Offensively, Kyle Bible had two hits and scored a run, while Jay Jennings had two hits, including a double.
On Saturday the team split with the Bay Area Giants at Lembi Park, winning the first game 12-11 and losing the second game, 4-1.
Kyle Richardson had two doubles in the first game, while Jennings had two hits and two RBI. Nicko Garibay had three hits and three RBI. In the second game, Bible had a pair of doubles and Carter chipped in two hits.
Heading into Sunday’s games, the Pioneers knew they needed two wins to clinch a playoff berth and they got the job done.
Richardson went 7-for-8 on the day with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Bible had two hits and scored three times in the first game, while Alonzo Rivera hit a grand slam and drove in five.
In the second game, Cater singled twice and scored.
The Pioneers enter Wednesday’s final home game against the Carmichael Cobras with a 15-16 record. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Lembi Park. The team’s final regular season game is Thursday at Tony Zupo Field in Lodi against the Lodi Grape Sox.
The playoffs begin Friday and continue over the weekend in San Jose.
