Manderes brews up good food and drink

Manderes is said to be a local favorite by many community members because of its flavorful beer, colorful food plates and attentive service.

Meet the Owner – Who is Brent Whited?

“Just a person with a dream to get into the business,” Whited said. “That’s the number one thing.”

Formerly the senior sales manager for all of the La-Z-Boys in Northern California, Whited took a chance and stepped out of the corporate world. After much research, he found the Sacramento area lacking in gastropubs, a type of beer bar serving high-end beer and food.

Manderes more than fills the bill with more than 100 varieties of beer, some 20 on tap and many more in bottles, Whited said. Selections vary over time for a wide spectrum of choices. An extensive wine list offers both domestic and imported selections.

“We’ve integrated a little bit of an Asian touch into a lot of our different sauces … but we’re still an American fare restaurant, with just that little bit of a twist,” Whited said.

After starting small at 402 E. Bidwell, the restaurant moved three years later to 1004 E. Bidwell St., Suite 600, Folsom, about six blocks down from the original site. The new site opened April 1.

“It was time for us to make a move and enhance what we were trying to accomplish,” Whited said. “It’s a better location, better facility.”

Signature food

It was difficult for Whited to choose a signature dish. What a person chooses from the menu depends on their taste buds, their mood and, particularly, he said, on “how hungry they are at the time.”

Some of the most popular are Old Rasputin Ribs, Korean Barbecue Beef and four different types of risotto.

He said that the Steak Salad was one of the top sellers.

“Especially when people are looking for something a little bit lighter,” Whited said.

Signature drink

With so many choices, Whited said it is also difficult to choose just one signature drink.

The menu item it will go with, as well as the person’s taste, will determine the appropriate drink, he said.

“(With the Steak Salad) I would probably go with a lighter beer, let’s say an Allagash Curieux,” Whited said. “Curieux means curious in French. It is an American beer, a Belgian triple-aged in Jim Beam barrels.”

Whited said another popular choice is the Grimbergen, a Belgian dubbel.
