A fitting end for the Garridos
By Don Chaddock, Telegraph Managing Editor Sitting in a Placerville courtroom, I vividly recall the look on Phillip Garrido's face when he was brought in for the first time. The story hadn't garnered so much media attention then, as it has now. Only about a dozen media representatives were in court that day when Phillip and Nancy first faced a judge. I stood probably 12 feet from the accused kidnapper and rapist. He looked around the room at all the cameras but his face showed no real emotion. His stare was glassy. Nancy wept at times. That was in 2009. Now, more than a year-and-a-half later, Phillip was given a 431-year-to-life sentence. While working on the story for the paper, I researched his prior conviction of kidnapping and raping a woman in a Northern Nevada storage unit. Many of the details of the crime were unsuitable for print in a family publication. Reading it made me sick. Garrido raped the woman, Katie Hall, repeatedly during an eight-hour period. Now, with the details of Jaycee Lee Dugard's captivity made public, a more complete picture of the man has come to light. Using a stun gun on the young Dugard, he held her prisoner in a shed for months. The judge was right, in my opinion, when he stated Phillip Garrido has used his charisma to charm his way into convincing others that pity and sympathy are required. Phillip Garrido is a class-A manipulator and thankfully the judge didn't buy his act. Phillip and Nancy will be locked away for the rest of their lives. She will be up for parole in 36 years, when she turns 91. Phillip Garrido will never again be able to harm a child or young woman. This week, justice has finally been served. Don Chaddock is the managing editor of the Folsom and El Dorado Hills Telegraph newspapers.
