Vista rips El Dorado, 12-2
by Brett Ransford/Telegraph Correspondent

Call it a streak.

The Vista del Lago softball team rallied to their third straight win of the season in a 12-2 passage of the visiting El Dorado Cougars on Wednesday.

Beginning with Carly Vendeiro, the Eagles brought in six runs in the second inning, quickly making it a big hill for the Cougars to climb. Vendeiro was one of three Eagles to go 3-for-4 with two RBIs accompanied by Christina Guidry and Ashley Wilcoxon.

On the other side of the plate, Morgan Theis only had to pitch five innings before her team 10-run-ruled El Dorado. She had six strikeouts, three of which came as she retired the side in the top of the fifth. Theis threw a total 42 strikes and 26 balls with only one walk.

With a comfortable 8-1 lead headed into the third, Vista added two runs in the third and two more in the fifth. As a team they had eight RBIs shared evenly between Vendeiro, Guidry, Wilcoxon and Tayana Mata, who finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Head coach Robert Reed is without a senior on his team, but is happy with a successful start.

“El Dorado beat us last year 7-6 where we got some runs but couldn’t put them away,” Reed said. “Today I thought we showed a lot more maturity and understanding with what we want to accomplish. I felt good about today because we’re doing what we need to do, playing the short game, getting some key hits and playing defense.”

In just 19 at-bats the Eagles scored 12 runs and only struck out twice.

The Eagles play two games on Friday and two on Saturday as part of a tournament in Jackson. Reed said keeping his team focused and comfortable with their style of play is key in preparing for their first conference game.

“I liked how mentally focused we were in the dugout today,” Reed said. “A lot of times young teams have an evenflow to them where they get either up or down. I thought Morgan pitched really well today. It really helped along with early hitting to take them out of the game early.”

Vista’s first Sierra Valley Conference game is on Tuesday against Cordova, who is off to a 3-0 start to begin the season.
