Sutter Street through the years

The Folsom History Museum provided photos showing the many faces of Sutter Street through the years.

The street was once unpaved with board sidewalks and horses pulling wagons and buggies bustled up and down the historic street. Soon cars began to sputter up the dirt road, eventually leading to paving. Once designated as Highway 50, the historic Lincoln Highway, service stations popped up along the stretch of road.

A fire in 1963 eventually brought about one of the most major changes in the street's history -- the center median complete with trees and gas-lit lamps.

The latest revitalization should be complete in November 2010.

While the street is closed to traffic, the parking lot at Wool is still open. The only on-street parking affected are the few spaces in the 800 block. The historic district is still open for business as the sidewalks remain open to pedestrians.
