Wins first baseball game against cross-town rival

Folsom High’s Daniel Wamhoff dives safely back to first base, as Vista’s Shane Murphy applies the tag during the Eagles 14-3 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.

In the first of what surely will be many baseball games between Folsom and Vista del Lago high schools, the Eagles came out on top with a 14-3 victory on Saturday.

The Eagles jumped on top with four runs in the first inning and after Folsom struck with three in the top of the second, Vista put the game away with 10 runs in the bottom of the third.

Vista coach Scott Seffens was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We hadn’t scored a lot of runs in games earlier in the week and we had a good practice Friday and were swinging the bats better,” Seffens said. “We only had seven hits, but then we only had four times at bat.”

John McCants and David Landuk both had two hits, a double and two RBI for the Eagles, while Jeff Miller had two hits, a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

Cody Kalehuawehe, Tyler Quesada, Brandon Flynton and Shane Murphy all scored twice. Quesada also drove in two runs, while Murphy stole two bases.

As a team, the Eagles had four steals and greatly benefited from eight Folsom walks and three hit batters.

Darian Harris started the game for the Eagles and pitched three innings, allowing three hits and three walks, while striking out two. Landis Provencial pitched the final two innings and struck out six.

For the Bulldogs, Daniel Wamhoff, Kyle Moeller and Troy Watson all had hits and stolen bases.

“There’s not much to talk about on our end,” Folsom coach Ryan Carey said. “The game turned out to be a good fundraiser for the teams, though. There were people there all day long and it was a great atmosphere.”

Seffens agreed.

“The Folsom Baseball Club donated time for the barbecue and donated profits to both teams and we charged admission and had a 50-50 raffle,” Seffens said. “I’m estimating each program got about $1,000 so it was a good fundraiser.”

While the game was Folsom High’s first of the season, earlier in the week the Eagles defeated Rio Americano, 3-2 and then lost to Bella Vista, 10-3.

Folsom’s next game is Saturday at Deer Valley, while the Eagles play Pioneer in Woodland on Thursday.
