Bulldogs playing well early, take Del Oro to five games
Folsom High’s varsity boys’ volleyball team is one squad that doesn’t have to worry about rain hampering its schedule. While other spring sports teams have had some games cancelled or postponed because of the weather or poor field conditions, the Bulldogs started their season last week with a 1-1 record. The Bulldogs defeated Elk Grove in three straight on March 2 and then took Del Oro to five games before losing on Thursday. Folsom coach Regan Archer is pleased with his young team’s play thus far, particularly in the loss to Del Oro. “We’ve only got two seniors and a lot of new guys, but they did great against Del Oro,” Archer said. “Del Oro is a tough team with an established program and we hung with them, taking them to five games with the last game being 16-14. The kids played awesome.” Folsom won the first game against Del Oro, 25-22, but then lost the second, 25-15. A 28-26 win in game three brought the Bulldogs to within a game of winning before they lost the last two, 25-16, 16-14. Folsom began the week with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-12 win over Elk Grove. Senior captains Drew Bowman and Mitch Morrey lead the Bulldogs. “Drew is definitely a player to watch,” Archer said. “He’s a 6’3” kid, who’s played some club ball. He’s our setter, but also hits and passes so that’s a great combination. Mitch is an outside hitter and considering his level of experience, he’s done a great job for us. “I’d say Eric Vavrinyuk is an up-and-coming player. He’s kind of a lanky kid, who’s picking up the game and could be a surprise player for us.” Folsom’s next game is at Ponderosa on Thursday.
