Folsom Lake College adds sports teams
This spring marks the first time Folsom Lake College will have an athletic program. The college, which became accredited in 2004, has three sports teams this spring: a men’s golf team and both men’s and women’s tennis teams. This fall they will also have a women’s golf team. Once the college builds other athletic arenas, they will add a soccer, baseball, softball and track and field teams, among others. Barry Zarecky coaches the men’s golf team. The squad, which consists of 12 athletes, will play two home matches at Empire Ranch and a third at Rancho Murieta. Kellie Diehl coaches the women’s tennis team which features seven players, while Ashlee Ashba is the coach of the boys’ team, which has a roster of 14 athletes. Both teams play their home matches at Broadstone Racquet Club. The tennis teams have matches scheduled through mid-April, while the golf team will play through the end of April. Folsom Lake College is a member of the Big 8 Conference with American River College, Sac City, Sierra College, Cosumnes, Diablo Valley, Santa Rosa, Modesto and Delta.
Tennis team opens season with win The women’s tennis team traveled to Modesto on Feb. 2 for their season debut and won an exciting match 5-4. The teams split the six singles matches and the match came down to the results of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team lost in a super tiebreaker, 14-12, but Folsom’s No. 2 doubles won in super tiebreaker, 13-11. In the final match at No. 3 doubles, Folsom Lake made it two out of three as their team won 11-9 in a super tiebreaker to take the match 5-4. The win was the first for any sports team at Folsom Lake College. Congratulations to coach Kellie Diehl and her players Maricela Medina, Skye Murray, Shelby Plasencia, Emily Roberts, Lauren Schultz, Lidia Villa and Lily Wong.
