Folsom’s Alex Hurlimann picked up one of three wins against Vacaville on Saturday during the section team dual semi-finals at Rosemont High.

For the fourth straight year, Folsom High’s wrestling team went 1-1 at the team section duals on Saturday at Rosemont High.

The Bulldogs easily defeated McNair High of Stockton in the first round, 64-21, but then lost to the eventual champions, Vacaville, 50-13.

“It was a familiar story as we won league, qualified for the section duals, beat up on our first round opponent, and then lost to the top team in the section semifinals for the fourth straight year,” Folsom coach Mike Collier said.

Folsom only won three matches against Vacaville. Connor Pollock at 103 pounds worked up a 12-4 lead before his opponent defaulted to him. Eric Dowd picked up a major decision win at 125, 11-2, while Alex Hurlimann won by decision at 160, 7-3.

Top-seeded Vacaville took control of the match with four straight pins in highest weight classes to put the Bulldogs away.

“We knew we had our work cut out for us, as Vacaville is a very deep, talented and experienced team,” Collier said. “We did not have our best lineup out there and it cost us in the end. We were missing our starters at 112, 119, 125, 152 and 171. You just can’t have that happen and expect to win against a state-ranked team like Vacaville. Over half of our lineup consisted of freshmen and sophomores.”

Tyler Rios (112) missed the match because of an injury, Sam Morgan (125) and Dillon Fader (171) were sick and two others didn’t make weight.

The opening match against McNair was just was easy as the Vacaville match was hard. McNair only brought seven wrestlers so Folsom earned six forfeit victories, which accounted for 36 of their 64 team points.

Tony Hernandez, wrestling 125, picked up the only pin for the Bulldogs in the final bout of the match, while Zyk Idrogo (119) won by injury default after working up a 7-2 lead. Tevenn Lewis (189) and Diaz picked up 15-0 technical fall wins.

Folsom is now preparing for Saturday’s Delta River League Tournament at Sheldon High School.

“We will try to get in a good week of practice with our sights set on winning the league tournament,” Collier said. “It will be a tough challenge, as we will go in with only 12 of the 14 weight classes covered. Our chief rival, Sheldon, will most likely have a wrestler in all 14 weight classes. We will need to get a lot of bonus points to make up the difference.”
