In the mutton bustin’ competition, little tykes try to hang on tight to their sheepish steeds.

The popular mutton busting competition returns to the 49th Folsom Pro Rodeo. In front of cheering rodeo fans, the tots get a chance to tangle with a woolly beast (or rather, a sheep).

The 5- and 6-year-olds compete nightly July 2, 3 and 4.

“It’s a few seconds of sheer childhood glee, apprehension and exhilaration that ultimately end with a mouth full of dirt as 5- and 6-year-old children take their moment in the spotlight,” according to a press release issued by event organizers.

A dozen pre-registered young cowboys and cowgirls get decked out in their best western outfits, grab a helmet and a fistful of wool and attempt to ride a full-grown sheep, according to organizers.

Most rides only last a few seconds.
